Manchester United FC, FIFA pays tribute to 30 Nigerian fans that got electrocuted in Calabar


Manchester United Football Club and FIFA has taken to their Twitter pages to pay tribute to the family of the 30 football fans who were electrocuted while watching the UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht yesterday.



A statement from football’s governing body Fifa added: “Fifa is deeply saddened by the deaths of several football fans in Calabar & offer our deepest condolences to family & friends of the victims.”



Over 20 fans lost their lives after they got electrocuted when a transformer close to the viewing centre fell and a cable dropped on the zinc of the building.





The Cross River state governor, Ben Ayade in statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press, Mr Christian Ita, sympathized with the family of those who lost their lives saying the incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state. He promised to look into the cause of the accident in order to prevent a recurrence.
